Maria Miller recently met with District Commander Scott Johnson of Basingstoke Police to discuss police activities in Basingstoke including what is being done to deter dangerous driving and car meets.
Maria commented, “Noisy car meets, and urban racing have caused a huge amount of noise and disturbance to residents for many weeks. While this activity is incredibly distressing, it is also very dangerous, putting other road users and residents into harm’s way.”
“The police have emphasised that dangerous driving and car meets will not be tolerated in Basingstoke and are committed to acting against those involved. It was reassuring to hear that only last weekend, over 30 cars were stopped and checked, and three cars impounded.”
“Basingstoke police are adapting the way they deter these illegal car meets, with an increase in unmarked cars and plain clothed officers, as well as using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. These deterrents, plus easier ways to report meets, will help reduce disturbances.”
“If you hear or witness dangerous driving and car meets, please report it to the police. The more information that the police receive, the more precisely they can deploy officers, giving them a greater chance of catching those responsible."
The police can be contacted on 999 in an emergency, on 101 or online using this link https://www.police.uk/pu/contact-the-police/
Vehicle crime can also be reported through Hants SNAP, which is a police initiative that targets alleged road traffic crime. More information can be found here: https://www.hampshire.police.uk/police-forces/hampshire-constabulary/areas/hants-snap/hantsnap/hants-snap---report-an-incident/
