Local MP Maria Miller recently visited Bishop Challoner Catholic Secondary School in South Ham, as part of her regular programme of visits to Basingstoke schools.
Maria met Head Teacher John Wright, for a catch up on latest developments at the school, including the new teaching block which was completed over the summer and has just opened, providing eight new classrooms. Maria also had a Q and A session with the Student Voice senior leadership team, in which they discussed a wide range of issues including the gender pay gap in Basingstoke and how Brexit might impact on the diverse nature of the school population at Bishop Challoner.
Maria said: “Bishop Challoner School clearly sets high standards for all its students, both in academic attainment, attitude to work and behaviour, and I was pleased to congratulate the Head on their excellent GCSE results in the summer. It is great to see the new extension now completed, which provides much needed extra classroom space.”
“The questions put to me by members of the Student Voice were interesting and insightful, and we had an excellent discussion. I was also very interested to hear what they were planning to do after their GCSE’s, and it was wonderful to hear their high aspirations for progressing to A levels, college and university.”
