Local MP Maria Miller has attended events in Basingstoke to mark the 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War. She joined hundreds of local residents at the Remembrance Service at the War Memorial in Basingstoke, where, along with the Mayor and representatives of the Hampshire Police and Fire and Rescue Services and others, she laid a wreath of poppies in memory of those who lost their lives. Maria also attended the opening of a new orchard at Castle Hill Primary School in Winklebury, where bells were rung in commemoration of the WW1 Centenary.
Maria said: “It was an enormous privilege as ever to attend the annual Remembrance Service at the Basingstoke War Memorial, and all the more moving this year as we marked the centenary of the end of the First World War, in which so many lives were lost.”
“It was also an honour to take part in the commemoration at Castle Hill Primary School, and the ringing of the bell for a two minute silence was particularly moving.”
