Basingstoke MP, Maria Miller, was pleased to take part in a panel discussion for Queen Mary’s College annual Conference. The conference, now in its third year, was on the subject of risk, titled: ‘Nothing ventured, nothing gained. What role does risk play in progress and excellence?’
The whole day conference was organised and chaired by QMC Politics teacher Tom Featherstone, and guest speakers included Aisha Washington, CEO of Ark; Saul Faust, Professor of Paediatric Immunology and Infectious Diseases, Southampton University; and Dr Timothy Secret, Head of Department of Philosophy, Religions and Liberal Arts, Winchester University. Students then formed discussion groups and prepared questions for a final ‘Question Time’ panel, which included Maria, QMC Principal Mark Henderson, and student representatives.
Maria commented: “It was great to be involved in QMC’s Conference for the third time, and to get back to holding the event in person once again. The discussion was really thought provoking and covered a broad range of questions, including: examples of risk taking, for better or worse, in our own lives; the impact of socio-economic factors on risk taking; the importance of risk to leading a full and successful life; and risk as it has related to the pandemic.”
“It was clear that the students found the Conference and the subject matter really engaging and stimulating, and I would like to thank and congratulate QMC for hosting such a successful event.”
