Maria Miller MP met with BBC South Today to discuss one of the first uses of the new ‘revenge porn’ law that she campaigned for in the last Parliament.
Jason Asagba is the first person to be convicted of a ‘revenge porn’ offence after pleading guilty to disclosing sexual photographs and films with intent to cause distress.
Asagba was charged with the offence earlier this year, on 15th May, and pleaded guilty at Reading Magistrates’ Court.
Asagba had posted images of a 20 year old woman on social media, and sent them to members of the her family, causing the victim extreme distress.
He has been sentenced to 18 month conditional discharge, with a £150 fine.
Maria said: “The Crown Prosecution Service will continue to watch closely to make sure appropriate action is taken in incidences of ‘Revenge Porn’ offenses, and will be ensuring that people are being deterred from undertaking such appalling acts against others.
Progress is being made, and an example has been made to the public of the consequences of such actions.”
