Maria Miller MP recently visited Merton Infant school in Popley, Basingstoke, to chat to pupils and staff.
Maria said, “With 28 languages in the school it is great to see how Merton infant school are celebrating diversity by taking part in the Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council Inclusion and Diversity Partnership, by actively changing their curriculum to service the diverse community at the school.
“This included the study of Brazilian artist Romero Britto by Year R who created their own sculptures, and having a language of the month across the whole school”.
Maria added, “I want all schools to be ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ to provide the best education for all children.
“When talking to the pupils, it was obvious that they loved their school and where they lived. They loved their local parks and using the local leisure facilities for gymnastics and the local leisure park for swimming”
“Celebrating pupils’ progress, as the needs of children are becoming more complex, is the main driving force at the school".
Staffing at the school is good, and the school is expecting an Ofsted very soon, with their last report in September 2018 being ‘Good’.
