Gender transition: Maria Miller, Chair of Women and Equalities Committee, welcomes Government consultation
Commenting on the news that the Government Equalities Office will be consulting on changes to the legal system for gender transition, Rt Hon Maria Miller MP, Chair of the Women and Equalities Committee, said:
“The Women and Equalities Committee in the last Parliament recommended that the Government bring forward proposals to update the 2004 Gender Recognition Act. Evidence the Committee received during its inquiry in 2015 argued that the process set out in the Act is inappropriately medicalised, and that the principles of gender self-declaration developed in other jurisdictions should be brought to the fore in an updated process. In its response to that report in July 2016, the Government committed to a review of the legislation.
I am pleased that the Government has now made good on that commitment. The upcoming consultation will be an opportunity for people to have their say and ensure that changes to the legislation are considered thoroughly and based on the most up-to-date evidence. I look forward to the publication of the Government’s proposals in the autumn.”
